According to the 2008 Reproductive Health Survey there has been a 9% decline in the adolescent fertility rate from 79 births per 1, 000 in 2002 to 72 births per 1000 in 2008 in the 15-19 age group, but there is still a need for significant focus on this population to prevent unintended pregnancies.

“Teen pregnancy robs girls of opportunities for continuing education and livelihoods and so, iOn World Population Day, July 11, UNFPA will seek to focus attention on this very important   health and development issue of adolescent pregnancy. In this way, UNFPA is seeking to amplify the call to empower adolescent girls and to make available to them the necessary information and services that will allow them to become drivers of the economy.
