The UNFPA Trinidad and Tobago Office celebrated World Population Day at The Brix Hotel in Port-of-Spain with engaging discussions, vibrant entertainment, and a strong sense of community. The event also included the Mid-Year Review and the ICPD 30 Review, emphasizing ongoing efforts and future plans.

The festivities kicked off with the UNFPA SROC Director, Elizabeth Talbert providing a warm welcome to the attendees.

“Today marks a pivotal moment for us to reaffirm our commitment to advancing reproductive health, gender equality, and sustainable development in Trinidad and Tobago.” said the SROC Director. She gave a reminder that the event was not only to reflect on the past but also about charting a course for a future where every individual’s rights and choices are respected and fulfilled.

She was followed by the Minister of Planning and Development, the honorable Pennelope Beckles, whose opening remarks set a thoughtful and inspiring tone for the day.

Minister Beckles closed by encouraging the continued involvement of all stakeholders, “Through this collaboration and partnership, we can effectively share in the diversity of all resources, be they physical or knowledge-based, to develop innovative actions to meet the mutual needs of all involved, thereby effecting widespread transformational change to meet our ultimate goal of leaving no one behind.”

A significant part of the celebration was dedicated to the Mid-Year Review and the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD 30) Review. The presentation, and discussions thereafter, provided valuable insights into the progress made and the challenges faced in implementing the goals of the ICPD. Participants engaged in robust discussions on how to accelerate efforts to achieve these objectives, ensuring that the dignity and rights of all individuals are prioritized in sustainable development initiatives.

To complement the formal discussions, the celebration featured lively entertainment, including traditional dancing and pan music, which added a cultural richness to the event. An unforgettable icebreaker came in the form of a Jeopardy game, which not only energized the attendees but also provided a fun and interactive way to learn about UNFPA and Trinidad and Tobago.

The UNFPA Trinidad and Tobago Office extends sincere appreciation to all partners whose contributions made the celebration a success.

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to addressing critical issues through partnership and community engagement. The celebration of World Population Day was a testament to the power of partnership and community in addressing critical issues.
