UNFPA, in collaboration with its partners, hosted a number of events and activities to recognize International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (IDEVAW) and the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The celebrations focused on the theme “Gender-Based Violence is Everybody’s Business: End GBV!”

IDEVAW and the 16 Days of Activism against GBV are annually observed from November 25 to December 10. This observance includes World AIDS Day on December 1, International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, and International Human Rights Day, on December 10.

The commemoration of IDEVAW creates awareness of all forms of violence against women and girls and its impact on the country’s socio-economic development. It also pays historical patronage to women and girls who have suffered at the hands of violence.

Activities began on November 20 with an IDEVAW Church Service, held physically and live-streamed. Other activities included the IDEVAW Banner Event - a public forum, and National Training for First Level Responders on GBV with a specific focus on guidance counselors, pastors, police, and domestic violence officers. There was also an IDEVAW School Tour across Jamaica to sensitize students on the issue of GBV, as well as other supported activities with the Bureau of Gender Affairs and other affiliated partners to recognize the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

UNFPA is committed to protecting and promoting human rights and supports the prevention of gender-based violence, which affects 1 in 3 women.
