The Spotlight Initiative was launched in Grenada on the 5th March 2020. Led by Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, the parliament buildings were illuminated to symbolise the efforts to shine the spotlight on GBV and Family Violence in the Caribbean region. Funded by the European Union, the launch was being done in collaboration with the European Union to Barbados, Eastern Caribbean States, the OECS, CARICOM and CARIFORUM. Grenadian stakeholders pledged to end violence against women and girls at the launch of the Grenada Country Programme in Saint George’s, Grenada.

The European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) have embarked on a new, global, multi-year initiative focused on eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls (VAWG). It is the world’s largest targeted effort to end all forms of violence against women and girls and has been launched with a seed funding commitment of €500 million from the European Union. The Initiative is so named as it brings focused attention to this issue, moving it into the spotlight and placing it at the centre of efforts to achieve gender equality and women's empowerment, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
