In the heart of Suriname, amidst the challenges of teenage pregnancies, school dropouts, and escalating crime rates, Sjaenda, a 25-year-old dedicated advocate, emerges as a beacon of hope. Her journey from a deprived neighborhood to an active member of the Youth Advisory Group of Suriname reflects a commitment to championing gender equality and sexual reproductive health and rights.
Driven by a fervent belief in equal opportunities for all, Sjaenda channels her passion into advocating for those whose voices often go unheard. Through her involvement in various projects, including the Agrifood Systems Transformation Accelerator (ASTA) and the MISP (Minimal Initial Service Package) Project, she spearheads initiatives aimed at empowering women and youth in rural areas.
In the sessions of the MISP project, Sjaenda collaborates with government officials to underscore the importance of addressing sexual and reproductive needs, even in times of crisis. Meanwhile, in the ASTA project, she educates women and youngsters on enhancing pineapple production while emphasizing the crucial role of gender equality in business.
Recently, Sjaenda represented the Youth Advisory Group of Suriname at the Children and Youth Summit SIDS in Antigua and Barbuda. Here, she engaged in discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities, gaining valuable insights into the latest trends and developments affecting small developing islands and countries.
Her participation in the summit not only provided invaluable connections and opportunities but also highlighted the commitment of Suriname’s youth to effecting positive change. By actively contributing to discussions and emphasizing the conference’s significance in interviews, Sjaenda showcases her dedication to advancing the goals of her organization.
As she looks ahead, Sjaenda remains steadfast in her resolve to apply the knowledge gained and leverage the relationships formed to drive success. Through her unwavering advocacy, she continues to pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future for the youth of Suriname and beyond.
