Hurricane Maria caused severe damage and loss of lives to Dominica in September 2017.  UNFPA Caribbean has been helping to build greater resilience by working with government agencies, NGOs, Youth and Faith-Based Organizations to prevent Gender-Based Violence during times of natural disasters. UNFPA has found that sexual violence is prevalent in humanitarian settings and may become more acute in the wake of a natural disasters. The victims are usually women and adolescents, whose vulnerability is exacerbated in the chaos of a crisis.
