On May 23, 2024, Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), engaged in an Intergenerational Dialogue, a key initiative funded by Global Affairs Canada under the Build Back Equal (BBE) project. This dialogue aimed to foster understanding and collaboration between different age groups to address challenges related to sexual and reproductive health and broader development issues.
The event, held in Dominica, served as an interactive forum where members of various generations gathered to share their perspectives. The primary goal was to enhance mutual understanding and address barriers that youth face in accessing reproductive health information and services. Dr. Kanem’s involvement highlighted UNFPA’s commitment to creating environments where diverse voices are heard and considered.
During the dialogue, participants explored the significance of including youth in local policy discussions and decision-making processes. Young people, including youth advocates and those who had experienced teenage pregnancy, voiced their concerns and ideas. Older community members, such as elders, church leaders, and decision-makers, contributed their perspectives. This exchange aimed to develop practical solutions that stakeholders could implement to better meet the needs and rights of young people.
The dialogue was facilitated by two moderators, one from the young and the other from the older generation, to ensure a balanced discussion. This methodology was crucial in capturing diverse viewpoints and crafting solutions that resonated across generations.
Dr. Kanem’s participation underscored the importance of engaging with diverse groups, including youth and the elderly, as part of UNFPA’s mandate. By fostering intergenerational conversations, UNFPA aims to create inclusive solutions that address the needs and perspectives of all community members. This approach not only strengthens policy development but also promotes a more holistic and resilient community.
The event represented a significant effort toward bridging generational divides and empowering individuals to contribute to meaningful change within their communities. As Dr. Kanem prepared to bring these insights to the SIDS Children and Youth Action Summit, which was later held in Antigua and Barbuda, her involvement marked a pivotal step in advancing global health and human rights, reinforcing the value of inclusive and equitable development.
