The UNFPA Barbados & the OECS Liaison Office convened a regional training workshop in Barbados on the 10th of December, Human Rights Day, using the hashtag #STANDUP4HUMANRIGHTS. The workshop focus was on Reproductive Health in Emergency Situations and targeted Programme Officers from Anguilla, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands and Montserrat who are involved in providing support in crisis situations. The training sessions were conducted by Ms. Denise Blackstock, Policy & Programme Analyst and Dr. Pilar de la Corte Molina, Sexual and Reproductive Health Advisor for the UNFPA Caribbean Sub-Regional Office.

Sexual and reproductive health problems are a leading cause of death and disability for women in the developing world. Young people bear the highest risks of HIV infection and unintended pregnancy. Many millions of girls face the prospect of gender-based violence, child marriage and other harmful practices. These issues exacerbate during disasters when health, social, community protection systems are impacted, affecting the capacity to respond to the varying needs of the affected populations.
