Marcia Griffiths empowers women in song & channels Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman No Cry” in #GBV fight

Watch international and legendary singer Marcia Griffiths, as she empowers girls & women through her music and channels Marley’s song, ‘No Woman No Cry” in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). She was performing at the Unite Against Violence music concert on 8 March at the Emancipation Park in Kingston. The event was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment & Sports and sponsored by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

UNFPA Caribbean Director Drayton – Agenda 2030 is multi-dimensional & needs informed decision making

Director of the UNFPA Sub-Regional Office for the English and Dutch-speaking Caribbean, Ms. Alison Drayon points out that Agenda 2030 is complex, multi-dimensional and in need of informed decision making. She appeals for improved data systems in the Caribbean which will help to inform the sustainable development goals. She was delivering opening remarks at the Conference on Population Planning for Development on 25 January 2017, at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston.

UNFPA Caribbean - PIOJ Williams: Robust investment in our girls is an effective development strategy

Mr. Easton Williams, Director of Social Policy, Planning and Research shares the adolescent and youth development goals expressed in Vision 2030, Jamaica’s long term development plan. He appeals for support in the implementation of better governance, infrastructure and education which will help alleviate the inter-generational poverty which plagues many Jamaicans. Jamaica has been able to cut its teen pregnancy rate in almost half since the 1970s, yet it still has the fourth highest rate in the Caribbean behind the Dominican Republic, Guyana and Belize. In this feature funded in part by UNFPA, 18 Degrees North tells the story of eighteen year old Shachelle Henry from Kingston who became pregnant at 13 after her nonchalant father encouraged her to find a man to support her. Through the eyes of Henry and another teen mother, the feature highlights the plight of teen moms in Jamaica.
