UNFPA Caribbean in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development & Labour in Sint Maarten hosted a two-day training on 22 - 23 March, 2018 at the University of Saint Martin. The training was facilitated by Dr. Zarife Mitfari, our Sexual Reproductive Health Surge Specialist and Dr. Pilar Molina, our SRH Technical Advisor. The aim was to build capacity and greater resilience among hurricane affected countries leading to more robust responses in the event of future disasters.

As part of the recovery phase activities, UNFPA hosted representatives from the Ministries of Health, Disaster Health Departments and NGOs working in areas related to SRH. Participants from countries such as Antigua and Barbuda, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Turks and Caicos and Sint Maarten all benefited from the capacity development sessions on the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for Reproductive Health in emergency situations. The MISP is a series of crucial actions required to respond to reproductive health needs at the onset of every humanitarian crisis. The MISP is not just kits of equipment and supplies; it is a set of activities that must be implemented in a coordinated manner by appropriately trained staff.
