In Belize, many adolescent girls grow up surrounded by negative stereotypes about their bodies, their communities, and their future. These harmful ideas often go unquestioned and become internalized, affecting how girls see themselves and the decisions they make about their lives.

When young girls are told they are “irresponsible” or “just looking for attention,” it doesn’t protect them — it hurts them. It lowers their self-esteem, silences their questions, and makes it harder for them to seek accurate information about their health, rights, and future. When conversations about sexuality are avoided at home or replaced with judgment or punishment, girls are left alone to figure it out.

That’s why UNFPA is launching the “Let’s Be Clear” campaign in Belize, as part of a regional initiative to transform harmful social norms and accelerate efforts to prevent adolescent pregnancy. This campaign aims to create new conversations that empower girls, challenge stereotypes, and provide access to information that helps them make confident, informed decisions.

“Let’s Be Clear” provides practical tools for families, educators, and communities to support Afro-descendant adolescent girls with empathy and respect. Through educational content, messages, guides, and testimonials, the campaign creates space for real conversations — not judgment.

By breaking the silence around sexuality, body image, and identity, the campaign invites everyone to be part of a change. Because when girls value themselves, ask questions freely, and access trusted information, they are better prepared to protect their health and shape their future.
