Sub-Programmes Sexual and Reproductive Health
For the Caribbean sub-region, meeting the objectives of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and its five-year review (ICPD+5) remains a challenge. Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) problems are among the most significant, causing high levels of morbidity and mortality and include HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unsafe abortions, a major cause of maternal deaths. Some of the main underlying factors are substantial poverty, a rising incidence of HIV/AIDS, early initiation of sexual activity and its inherent problems; the effects of migration on the social fabric of the societies, and gender inequity and inequality amongst others. Compounding this situation is inadequate access to Adolescent SRH Information and Services, inadequate recognition of sexual and reproductive health rights and problems associated with sectoral reforms.
Population & Development Strategies For the twenty-one countries in the English and Dutch speaking Caribbean, it has been a challenge to achieve the objectives of the ICPD Programme of Action (PoA) and its five-year review (ICPD +5) as well as the Millennium Development Goals. Information on the regional situation to assess the ICPD goals has also been limited, especially capacity for the collection and analysis of data on migration, ageing and training needs in population-related skills. National capacity to mainstream gender into national policies and programmes is also limited. Other areas for technical assistance include analyzing population trends and integrating population–related factors into national policies and programmes. The priority needs are summarized below.
