Laws enacted
- Legislation to support return of teen mothers to school; DV Act (2000); Gender and Development Plan; Social Development Act (1999): also protection of girls and women; Healthy Workforce Programme.
- Social Development Act:– Provides assistance to persons who are poor and needy, this also includes the elderly.
- 1997: Introduction of compulsory pension scheme for self-employed.
Policies Implemented
- Abortion is illegal; special legislation in case of incest and rape.
- Awareness campaigns; group discussions in clinics and schools with emphasis on safe sex; National Strategic Plan developed as part of national control strategy; establishment of a Health Promotion Unit on HIV/AIDS.
- Draft Policy on Ageing
- Social Security Financial Benefits increased from $160 to $200 monthly as well as implementation of non-contributory pension.
- National home care programme implemented, geared at caring for the elderly and disabled in their homes.
