Laws enacted

  • Sexual Offence Act, No. 1 (1998): Abduction, procreation and prostitution declared as a crime; Protection against DV Act (2001): protection against physical, sexual, emotional and financial abuse;
  • Child Maintenance Act.

Policies Implemented

  • Primarily training and sensitisation; HFLE education in and out of school; HFLE policy prepared but not adopted; ratification of CRC all national policies relating to children reviewed.
  • 1996: Universal Secondary Education Policy: Achieve universal secondary education by 2010; building and refurbishing of schools; compulsory education for all aged 5-16.
  • Policy development to ensure that older persons will be provided with protection, care and opportunities to participate in the development of the nation.
  • National Health Plan 2001-05 also addresses the needs of the elderly;
  • National Policy on Centenarians.

  • No financial resources available to provide access to quality RH
  • No financial resources available to expand choices. The Dominican FPA provides a range of contraceptives and has also introduced emergency contraception with counseling
