Achievements and progress in Caribbean countries since the International Conference on Population and Development in 1994

This section provides snapshots of how the various countries of the Caribbean have fared on issues of reproductive health, population and development and gender since the adoption of the ICPD Programme of Action.

It consists of a table with indicators used to monitor progress on the ICPD goals, as well as a listing of the major laws enacted and policies adopted over the past ten years. Countries have also indicated some of the constraints they have encountered and are currently facing in order to further implement the Programme of Action in the years to come.

This information was obtained through a number of sources including:

  • UNFPA Field Inquiry, 2003
UNECLAC Sub-Regional office for the Caribbean, POS, 2003
  • Devdata.worldbank.org, 2004
  • UNFPA Country Profiles database, 2003
  • Caribbean Epidemiology Center (CAREC): www.carec.org, 2004
  • CAREC, Status and Trends, Analysis of the Caribbean HIV/AIDS Epidemic, 2004
  • National Statistical Offices

By taking the numbers for the period immediately preceding the ICPD -- using either 1990 Census numbers or other sources of data up till 1994— and comparing them with those obtained for 2004 or the few years immediately before it, it becomes clear that the Caribbean has made tremendous progress on many accounts.
